A Complete Guide for Travelers & Newcomers
The Art of
Lingerie Care
How to wash, dry, and store your delicate pieces — so they last beautifully for years.
Why Proper Care Matters
Lingerie is made from the most fragile textiles — a single wrong wash can warp the shape, snap the elastic, or ruin the lace forever.
Silk, lace, and microfibre are prone to snagging, shrinking, and losing shape when washed incorrectly or at too high a temperature.
Heat and tumble drying degrade elastic fibres rapidly. Bra underwires can bend or pierce fabric if not handled gently.
Quality lingerie is costly. Proper care means pieces stay fitting, supportive, and beautiful for far longer — saving you money.
Hand Washing — The Gold Standard
For most lingerie, hand washing is always the safest choice. It is gentle, effective, and takes just a few minutes.
-
1
Fill a basin with cool or lukewarm water Use water that is no warmer than 30 °C (86 °F). Hot water breaks down elastic fibres and causes colours to bleed.
-
2
Add a small amount of delicate detergent Use a specialist lingerie wash or a mild, fragrance-free soap. Avoid regular laundry detergent — it is too harsh.
-
3
Submerge and gently agitate Move the garment softly through the water. Do not scrub, twist, or wring. Pay extra attention to any stained areas with light finger pressure.
-
4
Rinse thoroughly Empty the basin, refill with fresh cool water, and rinse until all soap is completely gone. Soap residue left in fabric can irritate skin and break down fibres.
-
5
Remove excess water — gently Never wring. Instead, press the garment softly against the basin side, or roll it in a clean, dry towel and press lightly to absorb water.
Machine Washing — If Necessary
Some pieces tolerate a machine wash, but only with the right precautions. Always check the care label first.
Place every piece inside a zipped mesh bag before it goes in the drum. This prevents snagging on other items and protects delicate straps and lace.
Select "Delicate," "Hand Wash," or "Gentle" mode. Use cold water (30 °C max) and the lowest spin speed available.
Use a detergent formulated for delicates. Never add fabric softener — it coats elastic fibres and reduces their stretch and recovery.
Drying — Slowly & Naturally
Heat is the number one enemy of lingerie. Always air dry — never tumble dry.
- Lay flat on a clean dry towel
- Hang on a padded or rounded hanger
- Air dry in a ventilated, shaded area
- Reshape bra cups gently while damp
- Allow to dry completely before storing
- Use a tumble dryer (even on low)
- Hang by straps — stretches them out
- Dry in direct sunlight (fades colour)
- Iron lace or silk directly
- Store while still damp (causes mildew)
Storage — Shape & Longevity
How you store your lingerie is just as important as how you wash it. Poor storage ruins shape even when washing is perfect.
-
🗂
Store bras cup-to-cup, never folded flat Stack bras with one cup nested inside the other in a dedicated drawer. Folding a cup inward crushes the padding and breaks its shape permanently.
-
🪡
Fold underwear gently — avoid cramming Fold knickers and briefs flat and stack loosely. Overfilling a drawer strains the elastic and distorts the waistband.
-
💨
Allow pieces to breathe Avoid sealed plastic bags or vacuum storage for everyday lingerie. Fabrics need some air circulation to prevent mustiness and fabric deterioration.
-
🌸
Add a sachet — not a spray A lavender sachet keeps drawers fresh and naturally deters moths. Never spray perfume directly onto lingerie — the alcohol in fragrance degrades delicate fibres.
Reading the Care Label
Every garment carries a care label with universal symbols. Understanding them takes all the guesswork away.
By Fabric — Quick Reference
Different fabrics have different needs. Here is a quick reference for the most common lingerie textiles.
-
🪶
Silk Hand wash only in cool water with silk-specific detergent. Never wring. Roll in a towel to dry. Keep away from sunlight — it yellows silk. Do not iron while wet.
-
🕸
Lace Extremely fragile. Hand wash always, with minimal agitation. Lay flat to dry — never hang, as lace distorts under its own weight when wet.
-
✨
Satin & Charmeuse Hand wash in cool water. Avoid rubbing — it dulls the surface sheen. Air dry away from heat. Iron on the reverse side at lowest setting if needed.
-
🧪
Microfibre & Nylon Most tolerant of the delicates. Can be machine washed on a gentle cycle in a mesh bag at 30 °C. Always air dry — never tumble dry.
-
🌿
Cotton The most durable. Can be hand or machine washed up to 40 °C. Still avoid the dryer for items with elastic or lace trims, as heat degrades these even on cotton pieces.
